Enrollment

Enrollment Policy

Southwest Charter School will not consider ethnicity, national origin, race, religion, disability, gender, income level, proficiency in the English language or athletic ability as factors in admission. (ORS 338.125 (3)) In accordance with state statute (ORS 338.125) and District policy, age and grade will be the only admission criteria used by the Southwest Charter School.

All age and grade-appropriate students who submit applications by the deadline embedded in the school's two annual enrollment and admission cycles will be admitted if space permits. In the event there are more applications than space available, eligible students will be selected through a random lottery process. If a class is not filled to capacity, then application may occur on a rolling basis at any time during the school year. An example of where this might be appropriate is to accommodate new families moving to Portland who seek a charter school option.

Students residing outside of the District boundary will be considered for admission after all students within the District have enrolled. After the first year of operation, priority enrollment will be given to students enrolled the previous year, and to their siblings, thus encouraging continued participation in the focus program. The Southwest Charter School has developed an application for enrollment that is consistent with, and similar to applications for other schools in the District.
